Getting to Know Me

Hola! I am Jorge, founder of Healing Hacienda Counseling. I am a first-generation graduate who faced the struggles of immigrating to a new country and undergoing many barriers and obstacles faced by immigrant families. From language being a major barrier to not knowing how to navigate higher education post-high school, I have lived the difficulties and challenges first-generation immigrants face. My goal is to offer a space where others who may be facing similar struggles can receive the support and guidance that a lot of us may not have had.

Growing up and being told that therapy was "for the locos” and to “just get over it” made me feel isolated, unheard, and rejected. Mental health was not something I felt comfortable talking to my parents about because it was not a common practice in my family to talk about our emotions. It was at my lowest points in life where I felt completely out of control that I wish I had someone who could help me understand what I was dealing with and how the anxiety and depression I was dealing with did not make me “loco” but human. This realization led me to pursue a career in counseling. Being a voice for the Latinx community and being able to extend mental health services to individuals and families in Spanish allows me to help spread awareness and understanding.

It is my passion to help those individuals strive to understand and appreciate their whole self and accept and love themselves for who they are, regardless of the travesty and turbulence that life has thrown at them.

My Professional Background
I earned my BA in Psychology and English at Lamar University. I hold an MA in English and a M.Ed. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Lamar University.
Through my professional experience, I have trained and worked with families who have experience some of the most devastating traumatic experiences. I have worked with children, preteens, teens, and adults who have been through sexual abuse, physical abuse, domestic violence, or other violent crimes. I have worked with both victims of abuse as well as non-offending caregivers and siblings. Working with these families and being a part of their healing journey as someone they can trust and rely on has been fundamental to their treatment. I have learned in my experience how trauma affects us all differently and how important the role of the therapist is in ensuring clients feel safe, respected, understood, and heard.
